A diary of an experiment in social entrepreneurship

Mutual Benefit

Know anyone in Portland? If so, simply by passing along this message, without voting or donating a dime, you could help ensure that NedSpace Portland gives $5,000 to Epic Change and $5,000 in scholarships to Cambodian college students…

  • Gideon Gidori is a 10-year-old future rocket ship pilot who lives in Arusha, Tanzania; he and 300+ of his classmates need a technology lab to get a head start on their dreams.
  • Leng Soprath is a Cambodian college student; she and many of her peers are in need of scholarships to further their educations.
  • Mark Grimes owns the socially conscious NedSpace in Portland, Oregon; he’s nearly filled the fabulous new co-working space, but has 4 more office spaces and 60 hot desk spaces to fill by June 1st.

It might seem as though these people – and their needs – have little in common.

But social media has made the universe smaller than you might think…and it’s made the possibilities for engineering mutual benefit nearly infinite.  A few days ago (on my 35th birthday to be precise – he’s got great timing!), Mark called me and let me know that if he can fill up the remaining offices at NedSpace by 5pm on June 1st, he plans to donate $5K toward a technology lab at our partner school in Tanzania and $5K toward scholarships for Leng and other Cambodian college students through the Sharing Foundation.

(Pause: Happy Dance Intermission!

I am so psyched that Mark knew about Epic Change and called me! You can have no idea how rad it is, too, to be on any list with the fabulous Beth Kanter, who works tirelessly on behalf of the Sharing Foundation.

Now that that’s out of my system…)

Now, we’re ISO that fabulous missing mutual beneficiary to complete this puzzle:  we’re looking for startups, innovative tech companies, nonprofits and social entrepreneurs who may be in need of some fabulous workspace in the heart of downtown Portland.

If you’ve gotta friend (or a friend of a friend) who just might be in the market for a fabulous new workspace in Portland, I hope you’ll help pass it on! By doing so, you’re not only hooking your pal up with a fabulous new office, but also helping Gideon & his classmates get a technology lab, Leng and her peers get a college education, and a socially-conscious entrepreneur create more good.

Just Help fill NedSpace at 920 SW Third (between Taylor & Salmon) Portland, Oregon by Monday June 1, 2009 at 5PM PT and help make the world a better place.  4 remaining offices are available at $400/mo. ea and 60 desk spaces are available at $175/mo.  For a NedSpace tour ask via Twitter @neddotcom or @technojosh or phone 503.334.1860
